Howdens discontinues German sales after test phase

British kitchen furniture manufacturer and retailer Howden Joinery Group (Howdens) has closed Howden Küchen GmbH in Norderstedt with effect from 25 January. The German subsidiary, through which kitchens and related products have been marketed since 2016, has announced this on its website. All guarantees will continue to be complied with. According to Howdens, activities in Germany were still in the testing phase.

In continental Europe, Howdens has so far concentrated on the French market, where it has a total of 20 kitchen studios. On a trial basis, Howdens also operates a kitchen studio in the Netherlands and two specialty stores in Belgium. According to the latest half-yearly report, Howdens generated sales of £14.7m in continental Europe in the first six months of 2018. Sales in the UK were £604.7m (+12.1%). Howdens operates 668 branches there. Overall Howdens sees potential for 800 kitchen studios in the UK.

The company has its own production facilities in Runcorn and Howden. According to Howdens, around one third of all products sold are manufactured there. The company buys the remaining two thirds from suppliers in the UK and abroad. Howdens has a total of around 9,000 employees.
