Belgian furniture imports rise at double-digit rate

Between July and September, Belgian furniture imports once again increased significantly by 19% to €716.5m. The Federatie van de Textiel-, Hout- en Meubelindustrie (Fedustria), had also recorded growth of 8% in the same period last year. The high increase rates recorded in the first (+23%) and second (+59%) quarters of 2021 had been partly due to a base effect. In the third quarter, deliveries from Asian countries such as China (+60%), Indonesia (+49%) and Vietnam (+106%) increased considerably. More furniture was also imported from Poland (+20%) and, from a lower starting point, from Denmark (+37%) and Great Britain (+150%). Imports from the Netherlands, which ranks second in the Fedustria statistics, stagnated at around the level of the preceding year at €88.0m; imports from Germany, the third most important supplier country, increased by 2% to €96.4m.

For Belgian furniture exports, Fedustria reports an increase of 16% to €433.8m. Strong growth was achieved in the most important sales market France (+20%) and in the third-ranked German market (+18%). Starting from a lower level, deliveries to Great Britain (+58%), Italy (+53%), the USA (+68%) and Spain (+42%) each also increased at double-digit rates. The increases contrast with a decline of 3% concerning exports to the second most important sales market, the Netherlands.
