Amorim: further declines in flooring business

At the end of 2018 Corticeira Amorim SGPS was again faced with declines in its floor & wall coverings business unit, which is predominantly focused on floor coverings. As a back-calculation of the figures for the entire year, published on 26 February, a 7.6% turnover decline to €28.1m ensues for the fourth quarter. All four quarters of the preceding year thus fell short of the respective turnover figures achieved the year before. After a 10.1% decrease in the first quarter, unit turnover declined by 5.7% in the second quarter and by 7.3% in third quarter.

In the 2018 financial year the business unit generated total turnover of €112.2m. This represents a decline of 7.7%. In the two preceding years, Amorim had still recorded increases in this segment, which mainly resulted from good development in demand for newer product lines. In this connection, attention was drawn to the water-resistant Wicanders Hydrocork flooring, which was introduced at the beginning of 2015. The company hopes for a similar effect for the market launch of the new WISE product line, which was presented for the first time at the Domotex flooring trade fair in Hanover in January 2019. WISE is also a water-resistant flooring with a newly developed, environmentally friendly, PVC-free cork rigid core.
