2020 German window market better than expected

Last year window sales in Germany increased even more significantly than the sector associations had anticipated in October. At the time VFF association, on the basis of the study compiled by market research institute Heinze had forecast a rise of approximately 0.5%. This forecast represented a considerable upward adjustment of the negative estimate of -5.5% issued following the outbreak of the corona crisis in May 2020.

According to the current study, compiled by Heinze at regular intervals on behalf of the VFF as well as three other window associations, over the entire period of 2020 sales actually increased by 3.5% to 15.298m window units (1 window unit WU = 1.3 x 1.3m = 1.69m²). The renovation segment, which increased by 4.1% to 8.8m WU, contributed at an over-proportional rate to this growth. In the new construction segment, the sales volume rose by 2.6% to 6.5m WU.
In the comparison between residential and non-residential construction, it becomes evident that residential construction has increased at a more significant rate of +4.3% to 10.0m WU. Of the overall number of windows fitted in the residential segment, 3.5m WU were attributed to the new construction segment and 6.5m WU in the renovation segment. Window sales in the non-residential segment increased by 1.8% to 5.3m WU; of this figure 3.1m (3.0m) WU were used in new construction projects and 2.3m WU in modernisation projects.
