– The Paris-headquartered tropical timber firm Rougier S.A. has reported a slight decline in the growth in its revenues seen since the fourth quarter of last year. Turnover improved 5.9% to €39.6m in the period from April to June 2011. By way of comparison, the firm booked growth rates of 20% and 14% in the two previous quarters. Revenues had thus increased by 9.3% to €74.1m (Jan.-June 2010: 67.8m) during the first six months of 2011 as a whole. The recently published financial report attributed this increase to higher deliveries and prices on Asian and European sales markets as well as a change in its product mix towards a larger share of refined products. Refined products accounted for 76 (74) % of group turnover.
Rougier reported improvements in all business areas apart from its plywood and veneers operations where it faced an 11.9% decline. This unit saw its share of group turnover decrease to 22.6 (28) %. The largest area in revenue terms, Lumber, achieved a 26.5% upturn in first-half turnover, raising its proportion of overall turnover to 53.2 (46) %. Revenues from roundwood sales were 1.9% higher than the same stretch last year, but their share of group turnover fell again to 24.2 (26) %. This rate stood at 36% in the first half of 2009.
The Afrique et International division, which pools Rougier‘s African production sites in Cameroon, Gabon and Congo as well as the merchant Rougier International, improved six-month revenues by 10.8% to €55.6m (50.2m). The company‘s second division, Importation Distribution France, delivered an 8% increase in turnover to €23.1m (21.4m). This unit includes its two sales arms Rougier Sylvaco and Rougier Panneaux‘s operations, which handle the import and distribution of roundwood, lumber and wood-based panels in France.
The group raised its first-half revenues in Asian markets in particular. The company generated 22 (19.9) % of its revenues in that region. European customers still made up the largest proportion of turnover with 63.5 (64.2) % despite a slightly deteriorating performance. Rougier said that its Sub-Saharan Africa region generated 4.9 (5.5) % of revenues, with American business adding 2.2 (1.6) % and the Mediterranean Basin and Middle East contributing the remaining 7.4 (8.8) % of group turnover.
