– The timber division of the Swedish Holmen AB, Stockholm, was confronted by an operating loss of SEK38m in the second quarter of 2011. This situation resulted from commissioning costs and write-offs in connection with the new sawmill in Braviken as well as a consistently weak lumber market with too low sales prices and consistently high roundwood prices. In the comparative quarter last year the business had generated operating profit to the amount of SEK11m. This included write-offs to the amount of SEK31m (April-June 2010: 7m). The EBITDA dropped to -SEK8m (19m). Turnover was increased to SEK221m (150m). Lumber production increased in the second quarter to 140,000m³ (77,000m³). This increase is due in part to commissioning of the sawmill in Braviken. Deliveries increased to 123,000m³ (71,000m³).
In the first six months turnover increased to SEK372m (Jan.-June 2010: 277m). The EBITDA, by contrast, deteriorated by comparison with the previous year to -SEK16m (+33m) and the operating profit also dropped to -SEK65m (+18m). The lumber production increased to 251,000m³ (144,000m³). This increase ensued exclusively from the new sawmill in Braviken, which produced 108,000m³ of lumber. Deliveries increased to 201,000m³ (134,000m³); of this quantity 62,000m³ came from Braviken. In the second half of the year production is expected to increase to reach a total of 310.000m³ of lumber over the entire year. For 2012 a production volume of 500,000m³ and for 2013 of 550,000m³ is planned.
The business of the Skog forestry division was again, as already in the first quarter, influenced by lively demand for industrial timber and a marginal increase in prices. The demand for sawlogs declined somewhat, although prices remained stable. Operating profit dropped to SEK178m (April-June 2010: 214m). With turnover amounting to SEK1.594bn (1.441bn), an operating margin of 6% (7%) was achieved. Felling in group forests declined to 792,000m² (882,000m²). In the first six months turnover in the Skog division increased to SEK3.29bn (Jan-June 2010: 2.849bn). The operating profit was recorded at SEK399m (403m). Cutting dropped to 1.456m m³ (1.525m m³).
Turnover in the paper business division increased to SEK4.385bn (3.937bn) in the first half year as a consequence of increasing selling prices for newspaper print and magazine papers as well as slightly higher sales quantities. The division generated operating profit to the amount of SEK127m, whereas last year a loss of SEK348m had been recorded. Paper production increased to 862,000t (847,000t) and deliveries increased to 845,000t (840,000t).
Although business of the cardboard manufacturer Iggesund Paperboard was influenced by a decline in demand at the end of the second quarter, turnover in the first six months increased to SEK2.597bn (2.333bn). The operating profit amounted to SEK482m (344m).
Turnover throughout the entire group increased to SEK9.508bn (8.628bn). The operating profit increased to SEK1.05bn (588bn) and the accounting income increased to SEK672m (312m).
