– (EUWID-Boston) The slump on North American particleboard and MDF/HDF markets that surfaced back in summer 2010 remained in place in the second quarter of 2011, too. Continuing the trend seen in the first three months, composite panel manufacturers managed to raise their deliveries compared with the previous quarter. However, deliveries were once again lower than the same period last year.
The Composite Panels Association (CPA), based in Leesburg, Virginia, announced that particleboard deliveries improved by a normal seasonal amount of 4% between April and June compared with the first quarter of 2011; MDF/HDF deliveries edged 2% higher. However, particleboard deliveries tumbled 7% compared with the second quarter of 2010 to land at 1.488m (April-June 2010: 1.600m) m³. MDF/HDF deliveries fell even more, declining 9% to 860,200 (949,700) m³. Deliveries of both particleboard and MDF/HDF dropped 5% during the first half as a whole. These decreases continue to reflect the sustained weakness of North American particleboard and MDF/HDF markets. Foreign suppliers were unable to benefit from the drop in local manufacturers’ deliveries. Imports have fallen even more.
In a continuation of the trend seen in the first quarter, Canadian particleboard deliveries subsided much more strongly than those in the US between April and June 2011 compared with last year. The downturn in US manufacturers‘ MDF/HDF deliveries was greater than the drop faced by Canadian producers in the second quarter. Within the US, markets on the west coast again performed much worse than the south/east when it came to both particleboard and MDF/HDF.
