– (EUWID-Boston) Between April and June 2011, North American structural panels production decreased when compared with the same period last year for the first time since the fourth quarter of 2009. Statistics released by APA-The Engineered Wood Association, based in Tacoma, Washington, show that total structural panels production in North America was 5% lower than the same period last year at 5.926m (April-June 2010: 6.252m) m³. OSB production declined more sharply than softwood production: OSB output tumbled 8% to 3.441m (3.746m) m³ while the amount of softwood plywood made was only slightly lower at 2.485m (2.506m) m³. OSB production also slipped slightly compared with the first quarter, whereas softwood plywood production strengthened. Total structural panels production thus improved slightly compared with the first quarter.
Canadian structural panels manufacturers fared better than their US counterparts compared with the same time last year. A growth in softwood plywood production almost offset a decline in OSB production seen in Canada, too, compared with the second quarter of 2010. OSB output in the US dived 10% compared with the same quarter of 2010. A mixed trend surfaced in softwood plywood production from region to region, but overall softwood plywood output decreased 2% in the second quarter. However, both OSB and softwood plywood production grew slightly in the US between the first and second quarters of 2011. By contrast, Canadian OSB production fell slightly.
