– In the second quarter of 2011, favourable sales opportunities on a variety of European sales markets enabled softwood lumber exports to rise 5% above those of the same quarter of last year to a total of 1.51m m³ (April-June 2010: 1.432m m³).
Only rough-sawn lumber was involved. The growth helped to compensate for the decline in exports, which had fallen by 3% in the first quarter. Data from the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden shows that the exports within Europe even increased by 11% to 1.246m m³
(1.122m m³). 1.219m m³ (1.096m m³) of this was delivered to other EU countries. The most important recipient country was Austria ahead of France. Deliveries to Austria were raised by 32% to 283,205 m³ (214,911 m³). Exports to France were 4% lower than last year’s figure at 226,935 m³ (217,444 m³). Exports to the Netherlands increased by 11% to 181,138 m³ (163,438 m³) and those to Italy registered growth of 18% to 158,180 m³ (134,508 m³). Rising from a low baseline, deliveries to Spain increased by 19% to 15,747 m³ (13,200 m³). In the UK, on the other hand, sales opportunities remained bleak. Deliveries there from the euro zone were also being made difficult by the rate of exchange. As a result of this, exports to the UK fell by 30% in the second quarter to 58,124 m³ (82,482 m³). Deliveries to countries outside Europe fell by 15% to 264,224 m³ (310,740 m³).
In the first six months of the year, exports picked up by 1% to 2.699m m³ (Jan.-June 2010: 2.664m m³). Whereas deliveries within Europe rose by 6% to 2.225m m³ (2.101m m³), those to non-European countries fell by 16% to 474,115 m³ (562,458 m³). Exports to Egypt in particular and those to Saudi-Arabia registered sharp reductions. Exports of spruce lumber increased by 1% to 1.943m m³ (1.924m m³). Pine exports, however, fell by 7% to 416,287 m³ (447,458 m³).
Exports of other softwood lumber rose by 16% to 339,848 m³ (291,949 m³). The value of the exported softwood lumber increased by 9% to €474.5m (€435.8m) and the apparent export value rose correspondingly by 7% to €175.8/m³ (€163.6/m³).
Lumber imports increased by 7% from April to June to 1.001m m³ (April-June 2010: 938,136 m³).
Shipments from Scandinavia climbed 11% to 314,827 m³ (284,386 m³). Whilst imports from Sweden and Finland rose by 7 and 21% respectively, those from Norway fell by 17% to 10,333 m³ (12,522 m³). The imports from eastern Europe only increased by 3% to 456,538 m³ (444,131 m³).
Here, rising imports from the Czech Republic, Estonia, and Belarus coincided with decreasing imports from the other eastern European supplier countries.
Lumber imports rose by 7% in the first half-year to 1.713m m³ (1.6m m³). The decisive factor for this was an 18% increase in deliveries from Scandinavia to 572,496 m³ (486,254 m³). Imports from eastern Europe, on the other hand, only rose by 1% to 747,728 m³ (743,254 m³). Whereas deliveries from Russia and the Ukraine dropped by 7 and 4% respectively, those from Belarus increased sharply by 50%.
Imports of spruce lumber rose by 5% to 1.251m m³ (1.19m m³). Pine imports were 4% higher than the figure for last year at 173,861 m³ (166,410 m³). Imports of other softwood lumber increased by 18% to 287,756 (244.169) m³. The value of the imported softwood lumber rose by 13% to a total of €341.3m (€303m), raising the apparent import value by 5% to €199.26/m³ (€189.36/m³).
