– Hardwood lumber markets in the UNECE region recovered slightly in 2010 compared to the year before after hardwood lumber consumption as well as output had fallen in 2009. According to the “Forest Products Market Review 2010-2011” published by the UNECE Timber Committee and the FAO at the beginning of August 2011, the overall hardwood lumber consumption in the UNECE region rose by 0.7% in 2010 to 31.7m m³. In 2009, consumption had slumped by 24.3% against the year before. Output rose by 3.3% in 2010 to 33.2m m³ after a decline of 22.9% in 2009.
Development in the UNECE, which comprises a total of 56 countries, is being increasingly influenced by countries outside the UNECE, most notably China, which increased its imports of higher-quality hardwood logs and lumber from Europe and North America in 2010. This development continued in the early months of this year.
Hardwood lumber consumption in the subregion of “Europe” in 2010 increased by 6.7% against the year before to 13.4m m³ (12.5m m³). Output rose by 9.4% to 13.2m m³ (12.1m m³). Imports climbed 11.7% to 5.8m m³ (5.2m m³) and exports rose by 19.1% to 5.6m m³ (4.7m m³). Limited to the EU, hardwood lumber consumption increased 8.3% to 10.2m m³ (9.4m m³) last year. Production was 10.7% higher than the previous year’s figure at 9.5m m³ (8.6m m³). Growth of 12% was registered in imports to a figure of 5.3m m³ (4.7m m³). Hardwood lumber exports rose by 18.3% to 4.5m m³ (3.8) Mio m³. All the major European producer countries managed to increase their output last year. Turkey registered growth of 8.8% to 2.3m m³ (2.1m m³). At 1.8m m³ (1.7m m³), Romanian hardwood sawmills produced 2.9% more lumber than a year earlier. The French production volume was 1.5% higher than the year before at 1.4m m³ (1.4m m³). German hardwood sawmills raised their production volume by 6.6% to 1.2m m³ (1.1m m³).
The UNECE statistics show a 2% reduction in consumption for the subregion of “North America” to 16.4m m³ (16.7m m³). Output remained unchanged at 17.3m m³ (17.3m m³). An increase of 35.6% to 2.6m m³ (1.9m m³) was registered in exports and growth of 31.4% to 1.7m m³ (1.3m m³) in imports.
The subregion of “Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)” consumed 12.1% less lumber in 2010 than a year earlier at 2m m³ (2.3m m³). Lumber output remained unchanged at 2.8m m³ (2.8m m³). The regions lumber exports, however, fell by 45.1% to 927,000 m³ (639,000 m³). Imports increased by 16.9% to 132,000 m³ (113,000 m³).
